Leonardus Tumuka, a young man from West Papua, is a son of a fish finder. His hard and difficult childhood life turned out not lessen his passion for learning. Tumuka is now known as a Doctorate who is a consultant to PT Freeport Indonesia.
Leonardus Tumuka, who is usually called Leo, had to work hard since he was seven years old to support his family because his parents were often sick. Leo even lived in a conduit without another close family.
Leo and his nine siblings were part of the Kamoro Tribe. This tribe usually do fisheries in the rivers as their livelihood. His income every day is enough to support his family. However, Leo was forced to sacrifice his dream of going to school.
A severe ordeal came again when the river where he worked receded. The receding of the river was caused by the construction of a dam carried out by PT Freeport alongside Mozes Kilangin Airport, Timika, West Papua.
In 1992, Leo received a call to attend Koperpoka’s President Instruction Primary School. After graduating, Leo continued his education at Saint Bernadus YPPK Middle School, Timika, until 2002. Then Leo and 72 children of his age received scholarships to continue their education at Madiun 2 State High School. In 2009, Leo won a bachelor’s degree in the Department of International Relations, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Pasundan University. Leo finally wanted to continue his education to a higher level.
Because of his achievements, Leo received a scholarship from the Amungme and Kamoro Community Development Institute to continue to the second level at Soegijapranata Catholic University, Semarang. Leo completed his studies in 2011.
The man born in July 20, 1984 finally finished his doctorate in the University of the Philippines Los Baños in 2015. Through his writings that raised the social issues of the Kamoro tribe, Leo was then trusted to become a consultant to the Department of Community Affairs at PT Freeport Indonesia, Kuala Kencana, Timika.
Leonardus Tumuka’s life story is proof that success will come to anyone who wants to try hard and not despair.
